Nonprofit group votes on leaders and the arts

Leading national nonprofit organisation for advancing the arts in America, Americans for the Arts, has released a congressional ‘arts report card’ as part of a major new initiative to involve more people in advocacy for the arts and arts education. The Report Card provides a complete detailed overview of all 435 voting Members’ of the U.S. House of Representatives arts support during the 108th Congress (2003-2004), assigning each member a letter grade and numerical score based on his or her voting record on specific arts and arts education policy issues. Thirty-three Members of Congress received the highest grade possible (A+), while the average overall score of Congress was a B. Interestingly, the Report Card also reflects increasingly bipartisan support for the sector. The report is the first major project of Americans For The Arts new Arts Action Fund, which enlists the support of the country’s citizens to help ensure that arts-friendly public policies are adopted at the federal, state, and local levels, and public and private resources are maximised.
