AFRICOM is pleased to announce 8-week internship opportunities to Museum Professionals in Africa, commencing January 2005. Who can apply?: African museum professionals below the age of 40 years, with at least two years’ experience in a museum or related heritage organisation. Priority will be given to AFRICOM members. Two interns will be accepted for each 8-week session. Where: The AFRICOM Secretariat in Nairobi located within the National Museum of Kenya (NMK) complex. Please note that one may be required to travel within the country as part of the internship. When: 2005 Internships Deadline for applications: 30th November 2004 for placements in 2005 10 January - 5 March 2005 14 March - 7 May 2005 16 May - 8 July 2005 18 July - 9 September 2005 19 September - 11 November 2005 Applications are welcome from educators, exhibition and public programmes staff in African museums, or those identified as having potential to work in these fields. Selections will be made immediately after the deadlines in each year. Selection criteria include AFRICOM membership, level of experience and studies, and National Museums of Kenya project priorities. The working language will be English. While proficiency in English language is desirable, the placement of non-Anglophone interns will be possible where the accompanying intern is bi-lingual. Each applicant shall be responsible for obtaining the necessary authority from his/her museum to enable participation. Selected interns will be provided a workstation at the AFRICOM Secretariat as well as space in the NMK project offices; they will have access to the NMK Library, collections, regional museums and AFRICOM’s Documentation Centre. AFRICOM will offer full scholarships to cover return travel (including visa cost if any), accommodation, and subsistence allowance. Interns will be jointly housed in a two-bedroom, furnished flat (apartment). Applications from qualified women are encouraged. Those who have previously applied and were unsuccessful, but who met the criteria, shall be re-considered upon submission of a new recommendation from Chief Executive/Head of institution and cover letter only.
