The fourth meeting of the Ministers of Culture of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLC) will be held next May, in Luanda, Angola. The meeting will be held so that the ministers can assess the outcomes and recommendations from the last meeting, which was held in April 2004. Also on the agenda is to further define how the countries and ministers can work together to promote Portuguese-speaking arts and culture across the world. According to the director for international co-operation, Henriqueta da Silva, one important discussion point at the meeting will be the possibility of creating a common museum for all member states (an idea that was first broached at last year’s meeting, the Maputo Assembly). Last year’s meeting had also brought up the possibility of creating a cultural observation committee that would be composed of member countries of the Community. The CPLC gathers Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tomé and Principalities as well as East Timor. Established in 1996, the CPLC is similar in aim to the Commonwealth, or Francophonie, though neither so well known, developed, nor funded. Nonetheless, Portuguese-speaking countries are home to more than 223 million people located across the globe having similar cultures and a shared history.
