The International Child Art Foundation is facilitating a healing arts program to assist the 1.5 million child survivors of the tsunami tragedy. Healing Arts for Tsunami Survivors is a three-phase program developed by the Foundation, in association with leading experts from around the United States and partners in affected regions, to help child survivors of the Asian disaster begin their healing process and move toward the resumption of normal lives. The programs three phases are: art therapy for children; psychological intervention for the traumatised; and evaluation of response. Activites and action will include: art therapy workshops; expert assistance and training; distribution of resources (such as art supplies, books, toys, musical instruments and school bags); and clinical assessment of child survivors artwork. ICAF are distributing their Art Therapy Training Workshop Guidelines via their partner network to workshop leaders and teachers throughout the affected areas to get things moving as quickly as possible. Participating organisations include: the Columbia University/NYS Psychiatric Institute; the Interactive Media Institute; the International Networking Group of Art Therapists (ING/AT); and the International Association of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Allied Professions (IACAPAP). ICAF organisers are seeking financial support for the program and the amount received will ultimately dictate the extent of the program's coverage.
