Draft of Convention on the Protection of the Diversity of Cultural Contents

UNESCO's draft Convention on the Protection of the Diversity of Cultural Contents is available online from the International Network for Cultural Diversity. The convention deals with a number of goals.
  • Affirming the fundamental right of all individuals and soceities to share in the benefits of diversity and dialogue as primary features of culture, as defining characteristics of humanity.
  • Being aware that cultural diversity, the common heritage of humanity, is a mainspring of sustainable development and it is thus as vital for humankind as biodiversity is for organisms.
  • Celebrating the importance of cultural diversity, for the full realisation of the human rights and fundamental freedoms proclaimed in the Universal Declaration for Human Rights and other unversally recognized instruments.
  • Recognising that cultural diversity is nutured by constant exposure between cultures, and that it has always been a result of the free flow of words and images.
  • Recognizing the diversity of cultural expressions, which illustrates the pluarlity of identities, is an enriching factor for peoples and individuals because it allows them to express and share with others their ideas, values and imaginaries.
