The head of the State Administration of Cultural Heritage in China, Shan Jixiang, has stated that the country has a long way to go towards protecting heritage sites. According to Shan, there are 138 ancient cities listed for national-level protection in China, but only 16 of them will be protected under current plans. Plans are being made for another 46 ruins, but more than 55% of cities remain without protection plans. Shan suggested that protection plans should be incorporated into urban development, with similar strategies taking place that show considerable success. 250 million yuan is currently being set aside by the Chinese government for the protection of large heritage sites annually.
