Following the recent upheaval in Wales on the arts policy that Culture Minister Alun Pugh is trying to instigate, the Arts Council of Wales has released a statement welcoming a review into the future of the organisation. Recently the National Assembly voted against Pugh's request to fund six national performing arts companies directly from the Government, instead of through the ACW. The Assembly asked that there be a national review of the Council's role, before any such changes to arts policy be made. In a statement released by the ACW, they welcomed the decision, stating that "We look forward to a process that will be open, thorough and transparent, as well as engaging with independent opinion. "We are ready to participate fully with the Assembly Government and the Culture Committee in such a review. We hope that both the process and its outcome will establish well-founded and lasting arrangements for the governance of the arts in Wales that reconcile the needs of democratic accountability and the value of the arm’s length principle in a way that will have the support of the arts sector and a wider public."
