Plans revealed for South African culture

The Department of Arts and Culture for South Africa has revealed its intentions for the promotion of arts for 2006 and 2007. Included in some of their activities will be a $R100 million investment into film, TV, books and publishing, with money going towards creating 'hubs'in the craft and music industries. Publishing will be boosted with the finalisation of a national book and publishing strategy, and the promotion of Indigenous languages. The department hopes to increase employment for arts workers by 5000 jobs over the next 3 to 5 years, including training opportunities, as well as intensifying the development of South African products. The department will also be increasing its ties with international, national, local and regional organisations. There will be $R700 million for the National Archives, with refurbishment of the Archives building. Libraries will receive $R1 billion over the next three years, and the department will also be launching the African World Heritage Fund. For more information on the plans, CLICK HERE.
