The Arts Council of Ireland has recently published guidelines on the protection and welfare of children and young people in the arts. The guidelines have taken two years to create and aim to assist arts organisations in creating policies and procedures to safeguard youth welfare during arts activities. The publication includes codes of behaviour for staff, recruitment and selection, and dealing with allegations and accidents. The Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, Mr John O Donoghue, TD said: “It is important for young people to create and enjoy art. It is equally important and necessary to take every step to ensure that the welfare and protection of young people is planned for and maintained while they are engaged in and enjoying arts activity of every kind”.
