AFRICOM – the International Council of African Museums – seeks an Executive Director. In November 2000, AFRICOM – the International Council of African Museums, was established as an NGO whose mission is to contribute to the positive development of African societies by encouraging the role of museums as generators of culture and as agents of cultural cohesion. AFRICOM seeks an Executive Director to manage its headquarters established in Nairobi (Kenya). The new Executive Director will be selected in October 2006 in Cape Town (South Africa) during the 2nd General Assembly and will take office in January 1, 2007. Experience Job description • Formulation and implementation of overall institutional policies and strategic plans • Promotion of partnerships with relevant organisations and institutions • Liaison with the Board of Directors on legal and policy issues • Conception, development implementation of regional and continental projects and programmes for the development of African museums • Elaboration of a Fundraising strategy, • Preparation and implementation of budgets, and expenditures • Management and supervision of AFRICOM office in Nairobi • Coordination and edition of AFRICOM’s publications • Preparation and organisation of Board meetings, General Assemblies and projects 1. Management: - Management position in a cultural or natural heritage institution or department or museum for at least 10 years. - Proven experience in long term planning, budgeting, proposal development and write up, staff management, reporting, project co-ordination 2. Fund raising: Proven experience in fund raising: donor identification, donor liaison, and marketing. 3. Cultural / Natural heritage Broad knowledge of cultural or natural heritage issues. 4. Ability and experience in writing project proposals and reports. 5. Languages: Proficiency in French and English (written and spoken). Knowledge of Portuguese, Arabic, Spanish will be an advantage. 6. Good communication skills. 7. Training: Ability to provide training in one or more areas of museum practice. 8. Excellent computer skills. 9. Age limit: 55 years 10. Be a national of an African country.Qualification: Minimum Master degree or equivalent in the humanities / social sciences, museum studies, natural / environmental sciences or 10 years’ experience in museum or cultural heritage management. Salary and benefits. Salary: Commensurate with experience. Benefits: housing allowance, medical insurance, terminal benefits (15% of annual salary), annual leave (30 days). Relocation allowance. Location: the position will be based at AFRICOM’s headquarters in Nairobi (Kenya). This is a three-year position renewable only once.
