The South African Ministry of Arts and Culture is exploring ways to combat revenue losses caused by piracy. Local musicians are facing income losses due to the increasing amount of piracy, and the Minister of Arts and Culture considered placing a tax on blank recording tapes and CDs. According to the Recording Industry of South Africa's Anti-Piracy Committee, roughly R350 million is lost on piracy every year. This is half of the industry's annual turnover. Minister of Arts and Culture Pallo Jordan said: "The impact of South African music and musicians on the world stage is an established fact. But despite this, no one could claim that our musicians are getting a fair deal, at home and abroad." However, he did state that while a tax will not be implemented, the Ministry will be looking at using technological advances to curb the issue of piracy. For more information, CLICK HERE.
