Council to investigate arts broadcasting

IFACCA/Artshub,
27 June 2006, Ireland

The Arts Council of Ireland has announced it will commission a report on arts broadcasting in Ireland. The report will address: the role of the arts in public broadcasting; the responsibility of broadcasters to safeguard arts and cultural coverage; the status of critical debate on the arts in the media; the impact of digital technology on arts broadcasting; and more. The finished report will inform the Council's dealings with public broadcaster RTÉ, and other media outlets. “The full recognition of the place of the arts in Irish society must be reflected in our radio and television output," said Arts Council Chair, Olive Braiden. "In the changing ecology of broadcasting, the Arts Council wishes to lead the debate on how the arts and artists are best profiled in our electronic media." "As part of this report, the Arts Council will ask some fundamental questions about broadcasters’ support for the arts in an era of unprecedented technological change. The report will also recommend to the Arts Council ways in which the arts can be fully reflected across all broadcast output." The report will be promptly commissioned from an appropriate specialist.
