New Project for New Music

Germany’s Federal Cultural Foundation (FCF) has launched a multi-faceted “New Music Network”, to promote public awareness and acceptance of New Music. The project comes in the wake of a recent FCR study which revealed that most Germans considered New Music to be "difficult", "intellectual" and "hermetic" and the domain of "insiders" only. The New Music Network will fund eight to ten German cities with up to 1 million euros between 2007 and 2011. Cities may apply to undertake one of seven projects, for which they must supply 50% of the total costs themselves. The projects include creating a new position for New Music promotion at a city opera house or concert hall, hosting a composer-in-residence, establishing an “ensemble in residence”, and simply funding additional performances of New Music. The FCF is also planning a New Music Network website, to facilitate knowledge exchange between the cities, and a Music Promotion Congress for 2008. It will also fund research into the promotional efforts currently being made on behalf of New Music in Europe, Japan and the US. For more information, CLICK HERE
