The National Endowment for the Arts has presented Maine Arts Commission with the 2006 National Accessibility Leadership Award. The Commission received the award in acknowledgement of its many programs that serve as national models for arts agencies, demonstrating long-term impacts, and involving the targeted populations in their planning and implementation. Designed to recognized exceptional and effective initiatives or programs that make the arts accessible and inclusive, the six-year-old award is worth $30,000. Previous award recipients are the Massachusetts Cultural Council (2005); the New Jersey State Council on the Arts (2004); the New York State Council on the Arts (2003); Ohio Arts Council 504/ADA Program (2002); and the Arizona Commission on the Arts (2001).
