Job Code: DDCEP-AAM Type: Full Time Preferred Education: Doctorate Description The Deputy Director for Collections, Exhibitions, and Publications at SDMA will: - Provide dynamic leadership for a large department (approx. 20 staff members) consisting of Curatorial, Registration, and Design & Installation colleagues; - Develop a comprehensive program for the care and management of extensive permanent collections, including provenance research and other art historical documentation; - Direct an active, varied exhibition program for the Museum, including both in-house and traveling exhibitions; - Coordinate the writing, editing, design, production, and distribution of all exhibition-related and scholarly publications at the Museum; - Assist with cultivation of donors and general fundraising activities that will benefit the acquisitions, conservation, exhibition and publications programs; - Engage local colleagues, and the broader cultural community, through research and exhibition programs of the highest quality; - Serve on the Senior Management Team of the museum (in addition to the Executive Director, this group includes Deputy Director for Finance and Administration, Deputy Director for Education, Outreach, and Public Programs, and Deputy Director for External Affairs); - Participate in meetings of the Collections Management Committee (and other board-of-trustee-led committees, as assigned) Requirements Specific Responsibilities: - Promote distinguished acquisitions (both by purchase and through gift) that will enhance the institution’s permanent collections and SDMA’s reputation as a primary repository for works of art of enduring quality and scholarly interest. Additionally, establish clear policies, priorities, and timetables for research on these permanent collections. - Provide direction and central coordination on all exhibition matters, including exhibition development, schedules, budgets, and contract negotiations. Work with curators and education and interpretation staff to suggest exhibitions that will interest and attract major segments of the Museum’s current and potential audiences. Oversee and coordinate the design, installation and production aspects of all museum exhibitions. - Develop and seek venues for a substantial program of traveling exhibitions to both U.S. and international venues. Work with curators to create exhibitions from the permanent collection with the primary goal of increasing the Museum’s overall scholarly profile and a secondary goal of generating earned income. - Create a coherent plan for collections care, including long-range planning and development of high-level, institution-wide standards. Improve documentation of the collections by completing and enhancing cataloging; updating and upgrading the Museum’s computerized inventory and collections management system including imaging; increasing and systematizing photographic documentation of the collection; and leading all other aspects that would enhance exhibition planning and collections tracking and care. Work closely with curators, conservation and registration colleagues to determine collection planning priorities, commission surveys, secure conservation research funding, and monitor projects and grants for conservation. - Supervise the Registration Department to ensure ongoing attention to both the exhibitions and collections functions of the Museum. Oversee the Design & Installation Department. Identify opportunities for staff development, such as conferences and memberships in professional organizations. - Oversee and manage the development, design, editing and production of all exhibition-related and scholarly publications created by and for SDMA. These will include scholarly works that are the culmination of collaborative work among a number of museum professionals and which provide the permanent record of an exhibition, and specialized publications, such as surveys for the permanent collection or commemorative volumes. - Establish and maintain contact with trade, university, and other museum publishers to identify joint or complementary publishing ventures that will establish the Museum’s identity as a generator of new knowledge and publisher of superior scholarly works. - Supervise and guide decisions, in close cooperation with the Museum’s Education department, about content and effectiveness of supplementary written materials used in exhibitions, including the design and typography of wall texts, labels, and signage. - Serve as a mentor and inspiration to more junior colleagues with the department and institution-wide. - Conceive and execute exhibitions in area of personal art historical specialization on an occasional basis. Qualifications: - Ph.D. (or equivalent highest degree) in European Art, Latin American Art, or other area of art history not represented by the current SDMA curatorial staff. - Broad knowledge of art history and high degree of interest in global cultural forms. - Extensive experience and established reputation within the international art museum community. - Deep familiarity with patrimony laws and Nazi-Era provenance issues. - Strong interpersonal and leadership skills along with a superior record of ethical behavior. - Demonstrated record of publishing scholarly works. - Ability to work within a complex, fast-paced environment. - Familiarity with technology as it relates to not-for-profit management. - Outstanding communication skills. - Impressive record of scholarly publications and public presentations. - Demonstrated passion for the visual arts. - Multi-lingual fluency (Spanish preferred). - Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and web-based research tools. Working Conditions - Members of the Senior Leadership Team at the San Diego Museum of Art are expected to devote a significant amount of time and energy to the successful fulfillment of their responsibilities. The Deputy Director of Collections, Exhibitions and Publications must be prepared to work evenings and weekend hours on a fairly regular basis, in addition to fulfilling the performance obligations of a routine workday.
