Arts and Culture Policy Workshop

The Department of Arts and Culture held a workshop at the Sandton Convention Centre earlier this month as part of the policy review process. This process will produce a comprehensive report that covers the following issues:
  • The objectives of the White Paper on Arts, Culture and Heritage (1996)
  • Challenges over the first decade of democracy (1994-2007)
  • Achievements over first decade of democracy (1994 – 2007)
  • Policy Gaps: What the policy and legislative framework does not cover
  • New developments, as well as present and future challenges
  • Changing needs: o Policy Direction for the next decade (2007 – 2017) o Aligning the White Paper with the current government framework. o Aligning to the present Arts and Culture needs. o Development of an Arts and Culture Plan for the 2007 – 2017 This Workshop was attended by Government officials from all spheres and delegates from Arts and Culture institutions, as well as other stakeholders from civil society. To enrich this process and generate debate, academics and other cultural experts were invited to make presentations. Speakers from abroad revealed how other countries manage arts and culture in their countries.
