Cultural Sector Skills and Training Research Project

Ministry for Culture and Heritage,
13 November 2007, New Zealand

The Ministry for Culture and Heritage is seeking to establish the extent and nature of skill shortages and issues relating to vocational education, training and professional development within the cultural sector. This information will be used to inform the development of advice to the government.
The expected outcome of the cultural sector skills and training research project will be a detailed report, which:
  • documents the extent and nature of skills gaps, shortages and priorities related to education, training and professional development in the cultural sector;
  • investigates the likely causes of any skills gaps or training issues identified in the research, and the extent to which any identified issues are particular to individual sub-sectors (i.e. museums, screen etc) or affect the cultural sector as a whole;
  • provides analysis of the costs (both real and opportunity) and other implications of any gaps/issues identified, over both the short and longer term, including strategic information on the cultural sector’s view of skill needs in the 5 to 10 year period; and
  • provides an outline of possible options/models for response to any identified gaps, taking account of the results of the interviews and other research.
