Executive Director, London

Arts Council England,
26 November 2007, England

Dear Applicant,
Executive Director, London
We are looking to recruit to this key post within our Executive Board, reporting to my successor, Alan Davey who takes over in January 2008. This is a post that will require the very highest leadership qualities.
The Executive Director will be responsible for providing leadership and direction for the support and development of the arts in London. This is our largest and most high profile region. With a staff of 130 and a portfolio of over 250 regularly funded organisations, from the Opera House and the National Theatre, to a host of diverse organisations of all scales, the post-holder will build on the enormous achievements already made in the region.
This is a unique opportunity to play a leading role in positioning the arts in London, and, through partnership working, play a key strategic role in the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The post holder will also play a key role as a board member of the national executive, responsible for delivering and implementing national policy and strategy, in support of the arts.
In such a diverse and culturally rich region, we need a leader who can enhance and champion current artistic endeavour in all its established and fast changing forms, while driving future thinking flexibly, creatively and collaboratively.
The post holder will command authority with both the artistic community and other key public and private sector stakeholders, signifying an Arts Council in touch with evolving and emerging cultural practice; changing audience and participation patterns and ever-evolving regional priorities for growth. Essential to the success of this role will be the ability to make the arts truly accessible, to embrace the nation’s multi-culturalism and to enrich people’s lives at every level.
We are looking for a world class operator in the arts, to join a highly performing team of executive directors who are passionately committed to achieving our ambitious agenda
If you believe you have the personal commitment and professional qualities to deliver in this key role we would like to hear from you.
Peter Hewitt, Chief Executive, Arts Council England
