Minister of culture and sport Stefan Wallin has proposed the establishment of a special media council for the purpose of improving media education of children and young people.

According to Wallin, who is also the minister responsible for youth issues, the Finnish Board of Film Classification could serve as a foundation for a new media council. He also said that he is willing to call for funding in future national budgets to finance such a council.

The purpose of such a council would be to increase knowledge of media affairs in schools, and to encourage self-regulation by producers of video material and Internet games. Sweden has had such a council since 1990.
