More than 10,000 people across Ireland in choirs - report

Arts Council of Ireland,
08 October 2008, Ireland

Singing in choirs is one of Ireland’s most popular arts activities, with more than 10,000 people in 400 choral groups right across the country, a new report from the Arts Council reveals.

Raising your Voice, shows how people across a wide social spectrum enjoy singing in choirs, from a young age right through to our more senior citizens.

The Arts Council will play a lead role in the future development of the sector. This will involve adopting a new and more engaged strategic approach, build on the existing huge voluntary commitment, and will represent very good value for public investment.

Pat the Cope Gallagher, TD, Chairman of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Arts, Sport, Tourism, Community, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs, said "as this report clearly reveals, choral music and participation in choral singing is very much present in Irish life. Choral music is one of the primary ways in which people in society engage with and participate in music."
