Campbell launches ‘The Art Factory’ in Londonderry

Department of Communities,
13 November 2008, Northern Ireland

The Art Factory will be used to produce large or medium size art projects such as puppets, carnival pieces, sculptures or artwork. It will also be used as an arts training workshop where classes in all types of art can be held.

Speaking at the event the Minister said: “The Art Factory is a prime example of how community-led regeneration initiatives can work to the benefit of the local community and wider city.

“The £4million North West Cultural Challenge Fund has played a crucial role in the regeneration of the city and, in particular, The Gasyard Centre, through a £328,000 investment to The Gasyard Development Trust. The investment has enabled the Trust to provide a purpose built multi-functional arts workshop space that can be used by all.”

Discussing the opportunity the new Art Factory will create, the Minister said: “The Art Factory will now have plenty of choice when it comes to arts and crafts for the city. Whether it is building carnival pieces, sculpting, or art classes, adults and children alike will find a form of art that takes their interest.

“This new state of the art workshop will, without a doubt, encourage and inspire our children and young people to express themselves, develop their artistic skills, unlock their creativity and hopefully trigger a lifelong interest in the arts.”

Commenting on the transformation of Londonderry, the Minister added: “I would like to thank Ilex, for the part they have played in the regeneration of the city and for their vision to place the arts at the heart of their regeneration strategy for Londonderry.”
