The Department for Culture Media and Sport would like to invite applications for two members of the Museums Libraries and Archives Council (MLA).
Duration of Appointment
The appointment will be for a term of four years.
Remuneration
Board members are not remunerated but reasonable expenses will be paid.
Time Commitment
The approximate time commitment is expected to be about 10 days per year for board members. Formal Board meetings are held about 6 times a year, usually in Birmingham.
Background
Leading strategically, the MLA promotes best practice in museums, libraries, and archives, to inspire innovative, integrated, and sustainable services for all. The MLA engages with its sector across the UK and internationally, collaborating on measures that deliver improvement.
MLA works particularly closely with partners in England, locally, regionally and nationally, to put museums, libraries and archives at the heart of lives and communities. It does so in the wider context of the cultural sector as a whole, through supporting learning and skills, and by adding value to social, economic and environmental objectives for renewal, regeneration and place-making. In particular, the MLA is responsible for leading and administering Renaissance in the Regions, the government’s investment programme to build capability and capacity in England’s regional museums.
The MLA has been substantially reorganised and has a new integrated structure. The Chief Executive is supported by Directors for Policy, Programmes, and Corporate Services; to which have been added three Directors of Engagement who work across England. At the same time, the MLA has moved its main base to Birmingham, retaining a small London presence and recruiting managers and engagement officers in every region.
The Board
The Board, of around 10 members, sets the strategic direction of the MLA, holds the Executive accountable for the delivery of agreed objectives, and helps champion the strategic aims of the MLA.
The MLA has influence across a broad sphere, nationally and internationally, and particular responsibilities and influence in every English region. In principle, the MLA Board should reflect this span and scope.
The Persons
We are looking for persons with a range of skills, experience or characteristics to increase the strength of the current board.
Essential Criteria
Experience and understanding of one or more of the following areas:
- Higher Education
- Local Government/Local Renewal
- Regional regeneration
- Business world outside of the sector
An understanding of the role that museums, libraries and archives play in enriching peoples lives
Knowledge and understanding of good governance, including an appreciation of the respective roles of Board Members and Executives
Experience of working in the public, private, or voluntary sector in a cultural or a related role, including insight into the management of significant budgets
A proven track record of imaginative and strategic thinking, coupled with a collaborative approach to problem solving and change-management
Passion and the ability to act as an effective ambassador for the MLA and its sector, with excellent communication skills, and with a special understanding of the regions of England
Respect for and commitment to public service values.
