Culture Council in Brussels

The Scottish Government,
12 May 2009, Scotland

Speaking after leading the UK delegation for the first time at the Culture Council in Brussels, Scottish Government Minister for Culture, External Affairs and the Constitution Michael Russell said:

"This was a very useful Council meeting which had a particular resonance because of its focus on the creative industries."

"Scotland has a strong creative sector with strong growth potential and I found it very useful today to explore what is happening at a European level, in terms of identifying gaps and ensuring that support for our creative industries is effective and based on what the industry needs in the current economic climate. Creative industries are a central component of the Scottish Government's Economic Recovery Plan and of great importance as we move to establish the new body, Creative Scotland, which will provide a new focus and impetus for Scotland's arts sectors and creative industries.

"We have much to contribute to the debate in Europe both in terms of experience and innovative thinking and I am determined that Scotland's voice is heard loud and clear across a spectrum of issues. As an outward looking, internationally focused nation our relationship with the EU and our fellow European nations is of great importance. Scotland has a rich and vibrant culture, and I want to continue to work closely with our European neighbours to collaborate on projects, share experience and promote our reputation for cultural excellence now and into the future."
