Minister Cullen welcomes Irish Arts Review 25th Anniversary Edition

Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism,
09 June 2009, Ireland

Martin Cullen TD, Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism this evening (9 June 2009) welcomed the publication of the 25th anniversary edition of the ‘Irish Arts Review’.

First published in 1984, the ‘Irish Arts Review’ is a journal of art and design in Ireland. The Arts Council-funded review, published four times a year, features articles on Irish painting, design, sculpture, architecture, photography and decorative arts. Subjects range from pre-history to contemporary Irish art, together with artist profiles, a quarterly diary of events, auctions and exhibitions around the country.

Minister Cullen said: "For a quarter of a century, this magazine, founded by Brian de Breffny in 1984 has celebrated and promoted Irish visual culture. Its strengths lie in its broad editorial scope, covering the historical development of the visual arts in Ireland and developing new audiences for the work of contemporary Irish artists."

Minister Cullen continued: "This 25th anniversary 136-page summer edition offers a fine diversity of articles – from Charles Cullen’s views on his work over 40 years, to a preview of Sarah Browne and Gareth Kennedy's project for the 53rd Venice Biennale this month; from 18th century splendour at Borris House in Co Carlow, from the great Elizabethan artist-cartographer Richard Bartlett to the craftspeople who have achieved a quiet renaissance in Irish design."

In conclusion, Minister Cullen said: "I trust that this vibrant and authoritative quarterly review of Irish art and design will long remain at the heart of Irish visual culture."
