International co-operation for creative industries sought at first c&binet forum

Department for Culture, Media and Sport,
14 August 2009, United Kingdom

Spotify, The Walt Disney Company and Microsoft will join dozens of international creative businesses to debate how to foster success and secure creative rights at the first Creativity and Business International Network (c&binet) this October.

The ambition for this inaugural event is to secure continued growth for the creative industries and provide the best possible environment to nurture the next generation of creative entrepreneurs. C&binet has been created by the UK Government to help business solve problems through international dialogue about the creative economy.

Reflecting the international significance of this successful economic sector, representatives from foreign governments are invited to join leading figures from the world’s most influential creative companies to build consensus on cross-border issues.

Culture Secretary Ben Bradshaw said:

“Britain is known across the world for the strength of its creative industries and the wealth of talent we possess. We want to make sure this success continues but to ensure sustained growth we need international co-operation. We also need to make sure the next generation of talent has access to the finance, support and new business models they need.

“I hope this year’s c&binet event will be informative and inspirational, with lively debates and frank discussions, fostering new relationships across both the creative and financial worlds.”

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson is the latest keynote speaker to be confirmed, alongside Jean-Bernard Lévy (Chairman and CEO of Vivendi) and Elio Leoni-Sceti (CEO of EMI Music.)

Lord Mandelson said:

"The digital economy has tremendous potential for the creation of new jobs and new growth. We need to ensure that the conditions are in place to enable the knowledge-based and creative industries to thrive as we emerge from the current downturn. We also need to nurture the considerable talent that exists in the UK and ensure the workforce has the skills to compete on a global scale.

"It’s important that the creative industries work together and across other sectors to address the challenges and opportunities they face. C&binet can help to build these links and I look forward to speaking at its main forum."

The agenda for the three day event, shaped by c&binet’s ambassadors- business leaders from across the creative sectors, will focus on four main themes:

Access to finance for creative industries
What do creative businesses need to do to attract investment and demonstrate reliability of future cash flow? How do you tackle the lack of understanding between investors and creative companies?

New business models for online content
How can a viable business be made out of online content without relying on advertising?

Developing Talent
What can be done to create opportunities for the next generation of creative talent? How can creative businesses make sure tomorrow’s employees have the right skills to thrive?

Securing creative rights
How best to ensure that those who generate and fund creative product are able to secure its value? Both regulatory and non-regulatory methods will be examined.

These themes will be explored in discussion sessions and fringe events which will be structured to secure real decisions on what action Governments and businesses should take to maximise the opportunities and address the challenges facing the sector. It aims to support the industries’ continued growth by promoting the flow of funds between the creative and financial sectors, encouraging different parts of the creative economy to share ideas, new business models and success stories, and helping the next generation of creative entrepreneurs.

The UK government currently leads c&binet with the ambition that it will be self-funding. A group of ambassadors, leading figures from the creative and financial industries, is helping to shape the c&binet agenda. More information can be found at the c&binet website.
