Cuba will create new international cultural awards

The intellectual Miguel Barnet, president of the Cuban National Union of Writers and Artists (UNEAC), announced the creation of several awards with the purpose of strengthening the projection and the international visibility of the organization.

Among them he mentioned the Raquel Revuelta award (Stage arts), the Carcia Caturla (Symphonic composition), the Miguel Matamoros (Music) and the Rene Portocarrero (Plastic Arts) for figures who have contributed to the Cuban culture from abroad, both Cubans and foreign.

Barnet said he was very honoured to work a bit more in the legitimization of the Cuban culture and recognised it is in the essence of the UNEAC, which means in valuing and legitimising the work of every Cuban artists and writers, both nationally and internationally.

Raquel Revuelta (1925-2004), founder of the Teatro Popular, was famous during her 60 years career both in theatre and cinema. She directed the Teatro Estudio Group from 1958, when she founded it, until her death.

Alejandro García Caturla (1906-1940) was a musical genius with a notable contribution of the symphonic creation.

Miguel Matamoros, was a Cuban musicians and composer, born the 5 of May 1894 in Santiago de Cuba. He had an important contribution to the development of the Cuban Son music, a rhythm which was created in the rural areas of eastern Cuba.

René Portocarrero (1912-1985) is considered done of the main figures of the Cuban plastic arts and one of the main Cuban artists of the XX century.
