Monuments on UNESCO World Heritage Book – in focus

The international workshop on preservation of the unique ancient monuments of Kunya Urgench – an open-air museum inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List was conducted at the Kunya Urgench State Historical and Cultural Reserve.

The workshop organized by the National Department for Preservation, Study and Restoration of the Historical and Cultural Monuments of Turkmenistan brought together the Turkmen specialists from all the regions of the country and their counterparts from France, who shared experiences in the restoration works, which had been conducted on two famous historical monuments during the past two months.

These include the world-known Kutlug Timur Minaret. The highest minaret in Central Asia has preserved well up to our days. However, the top of the minaret was deformed. The French architects and restorers together with the specialists from Kunya Urgench performed carried out the very elaborate work at the height of 60 metres to reinforce the brickwork that had exfoliated due to disintegration of the solution between bricks. Using the advanced technologies and state-of-the-art restoration methods the specialists managed to stop destruction on the top of the Minaret and ensured protection from atmospheric precipitations for many years.
