Pupils actively involved in arts and culture

Ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap,
02 November 2009, Netherlands

In line with the ambitions of Minister Plasterk, young people are being abled to familiarize themselves with one or more arts or culture activity. This is according to results from Culture Card spending, which was introduced in the 2008-2009 school year.

In total, over 11 million euros have been spent through the Culture Card scheme which was issued for cultural activities. Research has also shown that culture is increasingly a permanent fixture in education.

On the initiative of Minister Plasterk the Culture Card was introduced at the beginning of the school year 2008-2009 and presented to 926,000 students in secondary education, with the aim that young people between 12 and 18 years come into contact with art and culture. Each Culture Card has an associated amount of 15 euros. This amount may, depending on the preference of the school, be spent individually or together with the class on cultural activities.
