People and culture in Scotland, 2008

24 November 2009, Scotland

Scotland's Chief Statistician today published a range of statistics relating to cultural attendance and participation by adults in Scotland.

Key findings from the survey, which asked adults about cultural activities and events in the 12 months before they were interviewed, include:

- 78 per cent had taken part in at least one cultural activity
- 75 per cent had attended at least one cultural event in Scotland
- 53 per cent had visited an historic or archaeological site
- 49 per cent had visited a library
- 38 per cent had visited a museum or gallery
- 4 per cent had visited an archive or records office

Although there were variations by topic, groups which were typically more likely to participate were: women; young adults; those in the least deprived areas; those on higher incomes and those with higher levels of qualification.

Rurality was not a major factor in overall participation.

Compared to older age groups, younger adults reported more encouragement to take part in cultural activities or attend cultural events during childhood.

No significant changes in participation levels were seen in 2008 compared to 2007, with the exception of libraries where attendance dropped from 52 per cent to 46 per cent.
