Noted Cuban Cultural Centre to Host Regional Event

The Casa de las Americas cultural institution will host from December 14 to 18 the second Meeting of Young Artists and Writers from Latin America and the Caribbean that will bring together young intellectuals from different countries in the region.

In statements to the press, the head of this institution, Roberto Fernandez Retamar, said that all participants would have equal opportunities to discuss and evaluate from a theoretical and artistic perspective, the role played by the Latin American culture; and promote young artists’ work as well.

The main issues to be discussed at the closing ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of this institution will be migration, namely population movement, cultural rejection and cross-cultural transference; poetics, namely new languages, aesthetics and perspectives; scope, namely attendance, art opportunities, young artists’ work and media; and recognition, namely identity, cultural background and intellectual responsibility.

The program of events also includes discussions on young designers’ graphic works, visual arts exhibitions, lectures and concerts.

One hundred and fifty participants are expected to attend the meeting, which was celebrated for the first time in 1983 when the Meeting of Young Artists from Latin America and the Caribbean, comprised of exhibitions, concerts, performances and dialogues, which took place at this same cultural institution.
Under the motto Casa tomada—title of a short story by Uruguayan author Julio Cortazar — the celebrations will to pay tribute to this notable writer as well.
