Deadline for applications to participate in the 2nd World Conference on Arts and Education Korea 2010 has been extended

The call to participate in the 2nd World Conference on Arts and Education which will take place at Convention and Exhibition Centre COEX in Korea, on May 25-28, within the frame of reference of the International Year for the Rapprochement of Cultures –as was declared by UNESCO - will be open until February 28

The Conference expects to receive up to two thousand government officials, cultural experts, artists, educators and NGO representatives from over 193 countries.

This edition intends to evaluate the progress of the guidelines set out in the first conference, organized in Lisbon (Portugal), in 2006, with the purpose of setting out detailed strategies for the educational and artistic sector worldwide.

The Conference will deal with the relationship between arts and education, and teachers and artists training, as well as how this training is managed in schools, and at the local and governmental levels.

Colombia, through the Ministry of Culture, will be the spokesperson of Latin America and the Caribbean. This representation will put forward the region’s commitment to policies and actions promoting arts and education.

Clarisa Ruiz, Head of Arts of the Ministry of Culture and appointed speaker, said: “Colombia is preparing to present itself as an exemplary nation in the world summits on arts and education of 2010 as a result of its efforts to offer artistic education to everybody”.

Colombia has had an important regional presence. In 2005, hosted the Regional Conference on Arts and Education for Latin American and the Caribbean: “Towards Quality in Arts and Education, Challenges and Opportunities”. The report ‘Prospective Analysis of Arts and Education in Colombia: looking towards the year 2019’.

The ministries of culture and education signed that same year the Agreement 455/05. The guidelines of the National Plan on Arts and Education were established as a result of this agreement.

The most significant progress of this Plan is the project ‘Creative Colombia: Bicentenary Class of Arts Professionals’ and ‘Access for the Arts’, which has benefited over 1,030 artists and educators with an investment of nearly two thousand millions COP.

About Korea’s Appointment
Korea’s designation as host of the 2nd World Conference acknowledges its work to promote arts and education. The Korean Ministry of Culture, Arts and Education, jointly with UNESCO and other organizations worked to create an association to promote the participation of organizations and institutions of different sorts.
