It’s Library Week, a time to celebrate the contributions of libraries, librarians and library workers nationwide.

This year the National Documentation Centre, a special library within Dominica’s Library and Information Service that provides information to inform decision-making embraces the theme Come! Explore and Discover and will celebrate its first Library Week from May 10 – 14.

The Centre’s staff will engage in activities such as introductory tours, demonstrations, talks and discussions geared at bringing people into the Centre for sensitization sessions focused on raising awareness and promoting the benefits of its services.

The week will open with an ‘Open day’ in which the Minister for Education and other Senior Managers of the Ministry of Education, Permanent Secretaries, Heads of Departments and other Pubic Officers are expected to tour the Centre, meet staff, be informed on functions and services and participate in demonstrative sessions of the Centre’s electronic database.

On Tuesday 11th, dubbed ‘School Tuesday’ the Centre will host students of the Nehemiah Comprehensive.  On Wednesday and Friday officers from special libraries and information units within the public service such as Agricultural Division, Gender Affairs, Forestry, Cultural Division and Legal Affairs, will engage in activities to make them more knowledgeable about the Centre’s functions and services and to assist in improving information service provision.

For “Career Day” Thursday 13th, the Centre takes an audit and looks at the information professional.  Librarians and other library workers from public, academic and special libraries, information and communication units and resource centres island wide will gather to discuss developments within the profession and place emphasis on information sharing and networking.

The National Documentation Centre expects Library Week 2010 will provide an opportunity to inform on its service offerings and serve as a platform to foster an environment for information sharing and learning.
