Coscia presents the Book Law to the Senate

Ministry of Culture,
11 May 2010, Argentina

Jorge Coscia, Argentina’s Culture Secretary, met on Tuesday, 11 May, with the members of the Education and Culture, National Economy and Investment, and Budget and Treasury commissions of the National Senate to debate the bill to create the National Book Institute (INLA in Spanish). Alejandra Blanco, Head of Cabinet, and Rodolfo Hamawi, Cultural Industries Director, also participated in the meeting.

At the conclusion of the meeting Coscia declared: “Building on INCAA’s successful experience, this Institute will, surely, serve to promote the various links that intervene in the production of Argentinean books. Our objective is to institutionalize culture”.

This bill, that has been sanctioned by the Chamber of Deputees, foresees the creation of a non governmental public body in charge of giving grants and loans to publish, translate and sell Argentinean books, through a fund fed by genuine contributions coming from the sector. INLA’s main objective is to promote small and medium-sized publishing companies and bookstores.

Senators from all parties and cultural sector delegates took part in the meeting carried out at the Illia Reception Room of the High Chamber and displayed general consent about the bill.
