The bill on Tax exemptions to private contributions to culture will be debated next week in plenary session by the Congress of the Republic, right after the Education Commission refused to debate it, Luciana León, Member of Parliament, announced today.

This bill’s objective is to boost the development of national cultural industries through private sector support.

“This is a great victory for the country because thanks to private investment, in exchange for tax exemptions, it will be possible to carry out cultural projects in all fields making evident our great cultural richness.”

The legislator León, permanent member of the Education Commission, considers that this bill should be approved before the end of the current term, that is, before 15 June.

The majority of the Education Commission decided by vote not to discuss the Bill Nº 3191/2008-CR during today’s session.

León also stated that in Latin America culture patronage or private investment in culture has produced great profits for film, theatre, and cultural heritage restoration.

“Peru will be able to strengthen its cultural industries and see them grow economically, something that has been postponed for many decades.”

Artists and intellectuals like Augusto Tamayo, Fernando de Lucchi, Natalie Hendrickx, Frank Pérez Garland, María Ofelia Rojas, Cecilia Bracamonte, Fernando de Soria, José Escajadillo, Julio Andrade, Jimmy Santi and Manuel Ortiz, were present in Parliament backing up the Education Commission’s position against debating this bill.
