Artists to lead on Wales' profile in the world

Arts Council of Wales,
24 November 2010, Wales

The initiative marks a new cooperation between cultural organisations from Wales working internationally. The new Wales Arts International website also includes an online map of the world showing Wales’ international arts activities.

Wales Arts International has developed this pilot initiative following the recommendation of the National Assembly for Wales’ Culture and Communities committee report on Wales on the World Stage. Minister for Heritage Alun Ffred Jones welcomed the initiative:

"During economically challenging times it is more important than ever that the cultural sector works together as effectively as possible and with a view to maximising the public benefits that we derive from the arts."

"Wales Arts International cultural calendar, which I asked them to develop as a pilot, is one such initiative. I hope all cultural bodies with an international profile will feed into this initiative so it can develop in years ahead."

"We need to continue to develop effective partnerships at home and abroad if we are to consolidate and grow the reputation Wales enjoys outside our borders."

The online initiatives will be launched at Wales Arts International second International forum this week. Titled Beyond now: growing international aspirations and ambitions for the arts in Wales, the forum will focus on the value of international working and will consider how to grow international engagement for the arts in Wales.

Wales Arts International is a partnership between Arts Council Wales and British Council. Speaking ahead of the forum, Wales Arts International Director Eluned Hâf, said:

"In this global age, it’s critical that our leading artists are operating internationally both in terms of developing the arts and culture of Wales as well as to ensure that Wales is at the heart of the international creative economy. The new Wales Arts International website provides information and opportunities for artists to develop their international careers. It’s critical that we explore how the arts in Wales can exploit digital technology to maximise international opportunities. The arts play a leading role in developing cultural relations and in raising the profile of Wales in the world."

The Wales Arts International forum will take place in Theatr Mwldan, Cardigan and will be chaired by writer and critic Jon Gower. 50 key individuals from the arts in Wales, the UK and further afield are expected to attend.
