Arts and Culture Strategic Review Steering Committee seeks feedback on preliminary ideas

Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts,
11 August 2011, Singapore

The Arts and Culture Strategic Review (ACSR) Steering Committee is seeking feedback on its preliminary ideas from members of the public through an online public consultation to be held from 11 Aug 2011 to 10 Sep 2011 via its website (www.acsr.sg).

2             This online public consultation exercise is part of the ACSR Steering Committee’s intention to solicit feedback from various stakeholder groups following the submission of its interim report to the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA) in February 2011. In its interim report, the Committee highlighted its preliminary vision for Singapore’s arts and culture, the key challenges faced and its preliminary ideas. The Committee conducted a series of focus group discussions and interviews with the arts and culture fraternity as well as the general public in May to June 2011, where respondents generally affirmed (i) the ACSR’s proposed direction to broaden the appeal and opportunities to participate in arts and culture; and (ii) there is value in having arts and cultures as part of their lives.

3             Feedback from this online public consultation will be reviewed holistically with the feedback obtained from the focus group discussions and interviews as well as an upcoming quantitative survey. The Committee hopes that all feedback received will help the ACSR Committees refine its recommendations to better chart Singapore’s next phase of cultural development up to year 2025. The ASCR Steering Committee aims to release its final report by the end of 2011.

4             Mr Lee Tzu Yang, Chairman of the ACSR Steering Committee, said: “The focus group discussions have given the Committee useful insights into the interests and concerns of various stakeholder groups. It has also provided a sense of how some of our preliminary ideas could be further developed and better communicated. We have refined our ideas and are now ready to open up our consultation efforts to the wider public through the online consultation portal.  We look forward to a healthy exchange of ideas on how we can shape Singapore’s arts and culture landscape toward our 2025 vision”.

5             On the launch of the online public consultation portal, Mr Chan Yeng Kit, Permanent Secretary for MICA, said: “The ACSR has made good progress over the past year, and it is commendable that the ACSR Committees are carrying out an extensive consultation exercise on various platforms to seek the public’s views.  As all Singaporeans have a stake in the future of our arts and culture landscape, I would like to encourage the public to participate actively in shaping this future together through this ACSR consultation exercise.”

6             The online public consultation will be open from 11 Aug 2011 to 10 Sep 2011, and members of the public can log on to www.acsr.sg from 2:00 p.m. on 11 Aug 2011 to view and respond to the preliminary ideas of the ACSR Steering Committee/
