Black history month observed

The black history month was last Thursday celebrated in Accra to commemorate Pan Africans.

The day could be traced to Carter G. Woodson who spearheaded the Negro history week celebration in February 1926.It is celebrated annually to reflect on the contributions, achievements and the entire history of the African Diaspora, as well as the central role they played in American history.

The objective of the year`s celebration was to bring together youth and some of the Pan – African clubs in Senior High Schools (SHS) to engage in intellectual discursions through presentation of academic papers.

The programme was organised by the Ministry of chieftaincy and culture in collaboration with National Commission on Culture and the Diasporan Forum.

Some of the participating schools were Presbyterian SHS, Osu, Presbyterian SHS La, Accra Academy SHS, Labone SHS, and Accra high among others.

Speaking at the celebration, Mrs Rebecca Amooh Aboagye, who represented the Minister for Chieftaincy and Culture, Mr. Alexander Asum Ahinsah, said organizing Pan- Africa Clubs in SHS must be seen as one of the several ways of inculcating the spirit of Pan Africanism in the youth.

She said it was important that the youth appreciated the significant contributions of Africans to the development in all aspects of life.

Mrs Amooh Aboagye commended the organizers for the good work done and urged them to support Pan African Clubs in schools in order to sustain their interest.

The acting Executive Director of William E.B. Du Bois Center, Mr. Benjamin S. Keelson, said through the youth, new kinds of education and consciousness would help make Africans face the realities of survival

He stated that, Africans needed total preparation to take control of Africa in all respect, such as resources, control of self and the continent.

Awards and certificates were given to the participating schools.
