The National Council of Visual Arts awarded Fonseca for "the irreducible Cubanness and the magic quality present in his work during more than half a century”.
The irreducible Cubanness and the magic quality of the images created by Ever Fonseca earned him to be proclaimed National Award of Visual Arts 2012.

Instituted by the Ministry of Culture in 1994, the award rewards the body of work that constitutes a valuable contribution to the development and history of Cuban art.

This award, the most important in the field of visual arts in the country, was awarded by a jury chaired by last year’s winner Ernesto Fernandez, which evaluated 14 proposals from 26 institutions.
Born in 1938 in Manzanillo, while enrolled in Guantanamo, Fonseca was founder and first graduate in the course from 1962 to 1967 of the Havanna National School of Art.

Professor of the same institution for years, Ever's work has been highly praised by audiences and critics in thirty countries.

Among the awards received by the artist include the National Culture Distinction awarded by the State Council of the Republic of Cuba, the Alejo Carpentier Medal, and the Medal Raúl Gómez García, conferred by the National Union of Culture.
