Rafael Tovar y de Teresa, new president of the National Council for Culture and the Arts

By presidential order, Rafael Tovar y de Teresa was named on Monday 10 December, the Chairman of the National Council for Culture and the Arts (Conaculta).

This morning, at the Council's headquarters, located at Arenal 40, Chimalistac, the new chief of Conaculta thanked the outgoing president, Consuelo Sáizar, for her efforts as the head of one of the governing bodies of the cultural life in the country.

For her part, Consuelo Sáizar congratulated the new chief of Conaculta holder, whose work, she said, helped decisively to strengthen the institution since its first stage. "For me it was an honor to preside over a little more than three years this instance of culture, I want to thank the artistic and intellectual community of the country for allowing me to serve and accompany them on their tasks and purposes.”
Rafael Tovar y de Teresa said that many of the actions in strengthening cultural development have been carried out through the links that Conaculta’s different departments have shaped, which have enriched its work and the works and initiatives they have created, and the mission of the nstitution to make cultural goods and services accessible to all Mexicans.

Rafael Tovar y de Teresa said that his work will be devoted to two main policies of President Enrique Peña Nieto, the first consisting in making cultural promotion tool to prevent crime. And the second is to participate in the rehabilitation of the social fabric by giving the creators and audience options to improve their quality of life, in all regions, especially in the most deprived in the country.
"I come at a time when the country's needs are different, a country that has seen its social fabric fractured, so it is important to work through the contents of the culture to generate a better quality of life for our citizens and for the integration of young people, and to collaborate with cultural issues to a better the image of Mexico abroad."

He said that new technologies provide today the possibility of bringing culture to the people as never before in human history.

"There is a very strong desire of many sectors to participate in cultural life, not only as creators, as artists, but as producers, and here we enter the topic of cultural industries where technologies enable the development of initiatives that will have a place in cultural consumption and the role of individuals will be absolutely critical.”
