The Deputy Minister of Interculturalism of the Ministry of Culture will launch for the first time in the country, a participatory process of dialogue and information gathering to design a management tool on public policy and intervention for Afro-Peruvians.
Afro-Peruvian organizations will be the key players in this process as well as various state institutions and the Ombudsman's Office, which has played a central role in relation to the visibility of the afrodescendant population in Peru.
The document seeks to establish a set of guidelines for different sectors and levels of government, promote the development of Afro-Peruvians, and eliminate discrimination that affects them from an intercultural, intergenerational and gender perspective. The document will be the end product of the dialogue and the contributions of Afro-Peruvian organizations and the state.
The Ministry of Culture has organized meetings with local authorities and organizations in eight regions of the country with significant presence of Afro-Peruvians, among which are Piura, Chiclayo, Lima and Ica.
The director general of Inclusion of Ancestral Knowledge, the Deputy Minister of Interculturalism, Zulema Burneo, explains that this process, which has the support of the United Nations Program for Development-seeks "the widest possible participation of Afro-Peruvians and competent state institutions to ensure that the demands of Afro-Peruvian women and men can be incorporated into the actions of the State ".
On the other hand, the Vice Ministry of Interculturalism, in coordination with Afro-Peruvian organizations, universities and other government bodies have called the month of June as the "Month of Afro-Peruvian Culture and Contribution". This will involve academic and cultural activities along with a dialogue with the State, with regard to Afro-Peruvian Culture Day, held on June 4th.
