The National Council for Culture and the Arts launches book "Completing the educational model, 12 practices of arts education in Chile"

Consejo Nacional de la Cultura y las Artes ,
15 May 2013, Chile

Completing the educational model seeks to promote the essential role of the arts in education, across 12 significant practices in various institutions.

One of the responsibilities that the Council of Culture has taken is to promote arts education, understood as "an essential tool if we are building a model of quality education that promotes the integral development of the people," said the Minister of Culture , Luciano Cruz-Coke. It is demonstrated by studies that those involved in systematic arts education programs, are exposed to a number of positive effects, such as increased socio-affective skills, improved school life and learning processes, higher expectations for professional growth and a clear development of creativity.

Taking this into account and that the Chilean literature in this area is very limited, the Council took the initiative to elaborate this book as a way to contribute and highlight those practices that can serve as models for the development and integration of the arts in the education of students. "A better arts education improves the quality of education, empowers individuals, and strengthens democracy and ultimately the society as a whole. These 12 experiences show us that incorporating consistently the arts in education is not only necessary but possible, "the Secretary of State said.

Articulated in five key areas, some of the case studies featured in the "Completing the educational model, 12 art education practices in Chile", are:

1.-Developing creativity in full-time education

A prominent example is the Lyceum of Manuel Jesús Andrade Bórquez in Chonchi with the project ‘Moving the Arts in Education’. This project encourages the development of creativity in the JEC through various workshops of the Acciona program, under the National Council for Culture and the Arts. The workshops are selected based on a consultation with the educational community, thereby encouraging participation and collective commitment.

2.- Art Schools

Representative in this area is the Experimental Music School Jorge Peña Hen in La Serena. This school works on the premises of the University of La Serena and, as thought by Jorge Peña Hen, expert after whom the school is named, seeks for children to have a comprehensive education in the sense that they get the same level of teaching in science subjects, mathematics, humanities and music. The remarkable thing is that many students have chosen to pursue a musical career at the university level, positioning later in national and international orchestras.

3.- Integration of art in an educational project

The project Art in interdisciplinary  education has been implemented in n the College of Sagrados Corazones de Viña del Mar. The project includes Retirarte and Santa Cecilia, both annual and extracurricular projects. Retirarte is an experience that takes place early in the year and seeks to establish a connection between the development of spirituality and art through introspection instances, collective work and reflective capacity development and creation through meetings in places surrounded by nature, with work led by teachers. The other event is held every 23November, the day of the patron saint of music, St. Cecilia. On that day students prepare performances performed assembled in various artistic fields.

4.-Social development through art

Circus World is an NGO placed in Santiago that works in the field of creation and training children and youth in circus art. The goal is to use art as a preventive tool, and in development and social transformation. Every year between 120-180 children between 3 and 18 years old participate in the training. The institution works also pivotally with municipalities and educational institutions, where they perform various workshops.

5.-Arts education in cultural centres

Todos al teatro (Santiago) is a social, educational and cultural project that aims to introduce classic theatre pieces in schools,  transforming theatre into a learning space. The producer, Fiebre , in charge of the program, features works every week in the cultural centre Espacio Matta in the municipality La Granja, which are attended by 200 to 250 students. It should be noted that for 70% of the participating children this represents their first time in a theatre.
