New support for Indigenous Languages

Office of the Minister for the Arts, The Hon Tony Burke MP,
15 May 2013, Australia

Indigenous languages will be given a boost today under an Australian Government program to develop language resources to assist in the revival and maintenance of Australia’s hundreds of Indigenous languages.

Arts Minister, Tony Burke, today called for expressions of interest for projects under the Indigenous Language Support program to develop community-driven and culturally appropriate digital and multi-media language resources.

“Language is central to the practice and continuation of culture in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities,” Mr Burke said.

“People often talk about translating different languages as though language is a code which can automatically be transferred from one language to another.

“The truth is, that is a myth, there are always ideas, concepts and emotions in any language which simply can’t be translated.

“Preserving indigenous languages isn’t simply about preserving the languages themselves, it also ensures that culture, concepts and values remain part of Australia forever.

“In 2012 the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs identified a critical need for additional Australian Government investment to protect the future of Indigenous languages.

“Launched earlier this year, Creative Australia, the national cultural policy included a direct response to these findings, providing additional support over four years to extend the current Indigenous Language Support program.

“This boosts total Australian Government investment in maintaining and revitalising Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages to $54 million over the next four years.”

Mr Burke said the Australian Government was committed to Closing the Gap on Indigenous disadvantage.

Strong cultural identity is fundamental to Indigenous health and social and emotional wellbeing and support for Indigenous culture provides a solid foundation to enable outcomes across the Closing the Gap building blocks and targets.

Applications will open Thursday 16 May 2013 and close 6pm AEST Thursday 30 May 2013.
