Pioneer batch of Specialist Diploma in Arts Education graduates to inspire a new generation of arts enthusiasts and talents

An inaugural batch of 18 graduates was awarded the Specialist Diploma in Arts Education today. The programme is jointly developed by the National Arts Council (NAC) and the National Institute of Education (NIE). 

As part of the NAC’s support for arts practitioners’ professional development, the Specialist Diploma in Arts Education aims to strengthen the pedagogical skills of external arts instructors teaching in schools so that they can better complement the work done by school teachers. The part-time programme is tailored to meet the needs of arts instructors by enhancing their artistic practice with knowledge in lesson delivery and classroom management.

Mr Kenneth Kwok, Director of Arts & Youth, NAC said, “We are very happy for the 18 graduates, whose commitment to the programme shows a dedication to constantly improving their craft as arts instructors. We hope that they have been energised and inspired by what they have learnt over the course of the programme and will apply the knowledge and skills gained as they continue their good work in schools.”

The Specialist Diploma, which focuses on teaching and communication skills in an arts education environment, is offered to all arts instructors to complement their arts qualifications. (See Annex A  for Admission Requirements for Specialist Diploma in Arts Education) The programme further empowers arts practitioners as professionals in the field of arts education, to deliver well-planned lessons that meet the needs of students.

Dr Goh Chor Boon, Associate Dean, NIE said, “We believe that the standard of arts education in Singapore will improve through this programme, as the critical mass of arts instructors and practitioners can cultivate pedagogical skills and knowledge in arts. This will advocate quality arts education as an integral and integrated part of all schools.”

Launched in February last year, the programme consists of eight modules, spanning 240 hours in curriculum time. Participants are equipped with teaching and learning theories, and techniques to facilitate creativity through classroom activities and projects.

Mrs Ruth Tan-Khew, valedictorian of the Specialist Diploma in Arts Education said, “This programme has broadened my understanding in designing courses for students and in the training of my teachers. Now, I think of more ways to help students discover learning through critical thinking, and finding creative solutions to challenges.”
