The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Digicel for sponsoring the National Drama festival. The phone company has been on board with the Ministry for the past three years with the event. Digicel’s Director of Marketing, Jacqueline James said drama is a door that is open to youths, and her company is always happy to be on board with the ministry to allow them to express themselves. The National Drama Festival is an initiative to promote local talent and exhibit Guyana’s culture thorough an art form. Minister of Culture Youth and Sport Dr. Frank Anthony highlighted that drama is used to address social and economic issues through plays, poetry, songs and dances. The festival does not only promote local artistes/actors, but also writers. The latter category writes specifically for this festival, and their plays mostly reflect social issues and reach out to the audience. Over the past eight-and-a-half months, teams have been visiting the different regions, organising this year’s festival. They have managed to bring onboard participation from Regional Administrations, churches and even the Ministry of Education. The teams have also been providing training to individuals. After the first drama festival the Ministry established the National Drama School, and has since been working very closely with the School to promote the training in drama. Minister Anthony highlighted that the first batch of students will be graduating shortly and the school’s doors are open for interested individuals to register for the new semester. All expenses for the course are covered by the ministry.
