In observance of Diwali, the Festival of Lights, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport held a cultural presentation at its Main Street location. These celebrations give Guyanese an opportunity to gain a better understanding and appreciation for the various religious beliefs, traditions and cultures that exist in Guyana.

Permanent Secretary, Alfred King in his remarks reflected on the fact that every religion have common merits – those being love, peace, kindness, appreciation of the various religions and giving people room to express their beliefs.

He called on the Guyanese to inculcate the virtues the festival of Diwali promotes.

Former Principal Personnel Officer, Mr. Ramsaran, who is an avid supporter of the Ministry’s East Indian celebrations, shared on the stories regarding Diwali. He noted that for some Hinduism is a lifestyle not so much a religion.

Ramsaran illustrated that the festival of Diwali is nothing strange in Guyana as it was brought by the country when the East Indians first arrived. Further, the celebration is widely appreciated by many Guyanese.

He also spoke about some of the significant events associated with Diwali including the return of Rama after 14 years of exile. To welcome his return, diyas were light in rows. Diwali is considered the darkest night as such the lighting of the diya signifies good over coming evil.

Ramsaran also explained that Diwali is also celebrated in honour of Mother Laxshmi – the goddess of wealth, prosperity, fortune, and is the embodiment of beauty.

In Guyana, many have grown to appreciate the festival of lights for its many excitements which include the annual motorcade where the mandirs create flouts depicting aspects of Hinduism, the lighting of fire crackers, viewing the brightly decorated houses and the taste of sweets.
