Arts and Environmental Sustainability: Survey of Arts Organisations

IFACCA,
21 November 2013, Australia

Following the research survey sent to funding agencies, IFACCA and Julie’s Bicycle would now like to hear from funded art organisations to help them in mapping environmental sustainability activities in the arts and cultural sectors.

IFACCA and Julie’s Bicycle have a research partnership to map environmental sustainability activities in the arts and cultural sectors, and to identify what support and resources exist or could be developed. In October 2013, we sent a survey to funding organisations and we are now inviting funded arts organisations to participate in this important international survey.

The survey, which is available via this link, is in two parts:

Part 1: Your organisation: your organisation’s engagement with environmental sustainability and details on how and why your organisation addresses this issue.

Part 2: Policy, funding and partnership for supporting environmental sustainability: the main environmental issues in your country and how these are influencing the arts sector and arts organisations, existing programmes and initiatives related to environmental sustainability, and potential steps that arts organisations would be willing or hoping to take.

For the purposes of this research, the following definitions are used:

Sustainability usually refers to the balance between financial, social and environmental factors. For this research, we focus on environmental sustainability.

Carbon footprinting is a measure of environmental impact from sources such as energy, water, waste and travel. The results are presented in tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (that is, CO2e), which is used as a proxy to refer to greenhouse gas- related emissions from impacts such as water, waste and travel.

The deadline for responses is Friday 6 December 2013. The results will be analysed and circulated to all survey respondents for review and feedback, and a draft report will then be presented at the 6th World Summit on Arts and Culture in Santiago de Chile, in January 2014. If required, further research will be conducted in 2014 and a final report published thereafter.
