On 14 November, the Government instructed the Swedish Film Institute and the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority to improve the access to films at cinemas for people with impaired vision or who have reading and writing difficulties.

The remit is to lead to the development of new technological solutions that enable more people to enjoy cinematic offerings.

A report on the remit is to be presented on 31 October 2014 and implemented in close collaboration with organisations representing cinema owners, film distributors and user groups.

"To date, audio description screenings have been limited, and in addition with large regional differences. Audio description and audio subtitles in cinemas will make a huge difference to people with impaired vision or dyslexia," says Minister for Culture Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth.

The remit is a continuation of the Accessible Cinema project conducted jointly by the Swedish Film Institute and the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority on Government instructions between June 2011 and May 2013.

The remit is being financed via an additional SEK 2.3 million.
