1,400 people have participated in the consultation on the Ministry of Culture

La Tercera,
21 April 2014, Chile

The public survey on arts, culture and heritage has been open since 12 April.

More than 1,400 people have participated in the national consultation that seeks to collect opinions for drafting the bill that will create the Ministry of Culture.

The survey is available on the website of the Council for Culture and the Arts and is divided into four areas (Institutions, Heritage, Arts and Culture, Participation and Decentralization). The 22 questions include consultations such as: Should the current Law of Cultural Donations include new areas related to production and circulation of cultural goods and services? What role should the Ministry have in relation to a possible future public, cultural and educational television?

The creation of a Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage, is one of the three objectives by President Michelle Bachelet in the field of culture in the first 100 days in office.

The consultation began on April 12 and runs through May 9. The campaign includes the invitation by well-known culture figures  such as actress Delfina Guzmán and journalist Alfredo Lewin to join the consultation. The idea of this campaign is to motivate people to participate in the forum which is on the web. The information collected by this forum will be processed, analyzed and produced into a document to be submitted to the Congress for the parliamentary discussion of the law.

In addition to the web, the consultation process has been developed by two other routes. One  relates to encounters with the public in all regions of the country. These meetings are led by the directors of the Regional Councils for Culture and the Arts (CRCA), who have the task of explaining the main points of the new bill and collect feedback from participants, including artists and cultural mediators, authorities, NGOs and media.
