Research study commissioned by a-n and AIR looking at artists’ experiences of exhibiting in publicly-funded galleries, contextualised by material on the history of paying artists both in the UK and overseas.

The research aims to understand the range of different experiences, to identify good practice, and inform the adoption of new frameworks for artists’ fees. Publications include: results of a survey exploring artists’ experiences of exhibition practice, interviews with artists and galleries; literature reviews including of ‘grey’ material and reports on historical precedent in the UK and models of practice in other countries.

There is now a designated site for the Paying Artists campaign www.payingartists.org.uk, where you can find an additional publication on how to effect change for the better for artists, entitled 'Securing the future of the visual arts in the UK'.
