Chief Executive

York Museum Trust,
11 February 2015, England

York Museums Trust (YMT), is seeking to appoint a new Chief Executive to succeed Dr Janet Barnes CBE on her retirement.  Dr Barnes has led the development of YMT since its formation in 2002.

Operating within the tourist City of York attracting 7 million visitors each year, YMT is an independent charitable trust which manages the museums and gallery service comprising: York Art Gallery, York Castle Museum, Yorkshire Museum, Museum Gardens and York St Mary’s. YMT is an Arts Council funded Major Partner Museum.  It also delivers Museum Development in Yorkshire funded by Arts Council England (ACE), and the Portable Antiquities Scheme, supporting museums and galleries across Yorkshire and the Humber.  The collections are all designated and comprise history, archaeology, science and art collections including the most representative collection of British Studio Ceramics in the UK.

York Museums Trust (YMT) are seeking an inspiring leader who can motivate and empower YMT’s committed and enthusiastic staff, enabling the organisation to go to the next stage of its development and to raise further its standing.   A high calibre individual with a track record of successful management and leadership probably, but not necessarily, in the Heritage sector, you will be an effective ambassador for YMT and demonstrate good stakeholder management skills. With experience of managing a major capital project, you will be an excellent communicator who is commercially astute and financially literate.  You will also have the ability to create new income streams in an environment of decreasing local authority and public funding.  Innovative, creative, able to see the potential of YMT within the context of the world-renowned City of York, you will come to the opportunity with an energy and enthusiasm to meet the aspirations of the YMT staff and the Board of Trustees.

This is a rare opportunity to lead one of the cultural organisations outside London. If you think you meet these exacting requirements, then please ask for more information and an application pack from Mary Deegan of Liz Amos Associates by clicking on the apply button and sending us an email.
